My friend just picked up a 1988 Ford Mustang with a 5.0L V8 and a 5-speed manual and the thing is nuts! He bought it for $2k with 250k miles on the chassis and around 120k miles on the motor. The engine looks pretty clean and during a cursory search of fluids, we found nothing leaking or any dangerously worn parts. The body has some really bad rust (holes you could fit your hand in) but overall its a great beater to have I think. Anyways, do you guys know any really common problems for that generation mustang? Or alternatively, some good forums to do some research on. Thanks! Pics to follow soon!!

Pretty much any common problems can be overcome by swapping in other cheap parts. There's a reason they're so popular for cheap road racing.

Rear suspension sags pretty quickly but it's an easy swap. Makes me surprised to see so many with their rear lower than the front. But basically the mechanical bits are reliable and damn near free to replace. Bodywork could be a little more challenging, but similarly parts aren't expensive so I'd just replace the panels that are rusty if you can. If it's in the floorpan or something bigger, may need a good shop to take a look.

Subframe Connectors. Weld-in.
You can thank me later!

Yeah we were saying how it looked like the front end was really high up, I will definitely mention that to him. And its mostly the rear quarter panels, driver door, and front driverside fender that got the bad rust. The undercarriage seemed relatively rust free.

Yep, may be that the back is actually really low! haha
Sounds like a good project. Love those cars, had a 1993 in high school.

Tranny. I destroyed a couple of T5s. The power steering will whine and leak a bit but that's normal. You def want subframe connectors.
